Post 9/11 World

10 Ways the World Has Changed Since 9/11

Following up on our discussion in class, take a look at the article above.  Comment on this post about what a post 9/11 world means to you.

  1. Positively thinking, the US grew stronger after 9/11. Even though we lost so many beloved Americans, it taught the country to be safer and stronger. It brought us awareness to our future enemy and we've begun to whittle down terrorism little by little over the years. Having this happened, America is now more secure and stronger than ever. We remember 9/11 as one of the turning points in US history.

  2. Although painstakingly tragic, 9/11 has created a safer place for the United States. Our central intelligence has increased significantly, military capabilities are highly developed, and we've become more globally aware of what's occurring in other nations. Through this horrific event, our nation has developed a greater sense of patriotism and unity. We've decreased our dependency on other nations, and are more prepared for whatever may come.

  3. Despite the heinous event and its' negative ramifications, the principle of "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" stands; the United States came out of 9/11 as a stronger and more unified country. We made the world a safer place by executing our counter offensive on the Al-Qaeda and managed to eliminate its' leader, Osama Bin Laden. Additionally, we developed our security measures and became a more self-sufficient country.

  4. The post 9/11 world has shown the true power of terrorist organizations and their ability to harm the worlds strongest military powers. 9/11 was a no win situation for the US as the goal of terrorist attacks is to strike fear in the US population. Since then we have increased our security for air travel in fear for our well being doing exactly what Al-Qauda had hoped to achieve yet if we had not improved our security we would be at a high risk for another attack. The post 9/11 world shows that we are weak to a hopeless situation were there is no right choice. 9/11 showed in the end that no matter how big your country is it can easily be manipulated and controlled

  5. Thirteen years after the tragedy known as 9/11, the United States has become a more secure and more foreign policy invested nation*. Internet, phone, and [air] travel surveillance have increased; similarly, our interests in and actions towards Ukraine, Syria and Iran are possibly stronger than they would have been had 9/11 not occurred. Without a doubt, the consequences of 9/11 will continue to influence the lives not only of Americans, but also those of non-Americans for years to come.
*Question: Could our preoccupation with foreign policy be one [among many] reasons for our negligence with regards to dealing with the national debt?

  7. Since the tragic day of 9/11, a shock wave sent not only the US, but the whole world into a state of alarm that generated many more aware societies. Positively, the US has worked to develop and largely improve its national defense by raising the military budget and enforcing much stricter security policies nationwide. In addition, America has overall become less dependent on foreign resources, enabling it to grow more as an independent country and hopefully overcome the debt it accumulated over the years as a negative consequence of defense spending in the post 9/11 world.

  8. While 9/11 may have been one of the biggest tragedies, if not the biggest, in U.S history, we have to note that from the ashes of that tragedy, we have grown back into a stronger nation. With Freedom Tower, we put up a symbol of our regrowth and our strength, and we are showing the world that, no matter what, we will always come back. As a nation, we grew more aware of the issues in the world and in our country, and we use our knowledge to build a better country.

  9. The after math of 9/11 has made the American society and government stronger than ever. 9/11 demonstrated that the United States is not invincible and terrorism is a major threat for our country. Therefore, our country benefited from this terrible act of terrorism by increasing our intelligence and putting more restrictions on air traffic.

  10. Ever since the United States was caught off guard by the terrorist attacks on 9/11, our country has changed dramatically. In order to insure national security and prevent future attacks, the NSA has been keeping an eye on our phone calls which has come under fire by many people. Besides the killing of Osama Bin Laden, the United States has continued to struggle against the war on terrorism and continues to fear for the threat of more attacks.Overall, I believe that 9/11 removed the blindfold off of many people when it comes down to the dangers of security threats.

  11. After the tragedy of the 9/11 attacks, most people only focused on the negatives, but post 9/11 world has brought a greater sense of patriotism in the country. People were given a reality check that resulted in more kindness and empathy for those around them. Our country also grew more aware and secure.

  12. After the traumatic 9/11 terrorist attacks, our country has greatly strengthened and unified. After the attacks, the security within the US has strengthened and our intelligence community has grown. Due to the great improvements in intelligence and security, the US military was able to track down and kill Osama Bin Laden. Although we lost many lives, the post-9/11 US has grown stronger and still dominates as a world power.

  13. Though a tragic event, the U.S. has been positively shaped following 9/11. Our country has experienced great advancements in its security, intelligence, and strength. Diversity has also improved, resulting in more multicultural communities. We have also learned to become less dependent on other countries. Despite the great loss of lives, 9/11 has ultimately led to a safer, more unified country.

  14. The earthquake of astounding events that occurred that fateful day of September 11th left the world in horror, shock and awe. Like any colossal travesty, there arose a tidal wave of secondary, long-term effects that left the nation awash in reminders of that tragic day. Around us we can see bolstered security on all fronts - the time and time again referenced airport security, a war on terrorism, increased self-sufficiency in regards to fuel, and a nation left standing stronger atop the rubble of those towers. To look at the fallout in a positive light is not to belittle the events that transpired that day; in fact, just the opposite. To see these waves as eternal reminders of the fall of the Twin Towers is to honor the memory the brave man and women who lost their lives that day, and those that survived - scarred but standing.

  15. Over a decade after the 9/11 attacks, they have essentially reshaped many facets of life in America. Some changes have been permanent and some temporary. The concern of our safety is the biggest change in American lives, looking at these responses above, I'm pretty sure we all can agree. A post 9/11 world also means that being monitored every second is crucial in keeping us safe; being tracked by cameras, and being listened on, in our phone conversations by the NSA , is a major part of our nations security. It has made at least myself a bit more conscious on whats happening, and what information is begin collected. To me, the biggest and most obvious post 9/11 change comes down to air travel. The TSA became much stricter after the Aviation and Transportation Security Act was passed by Congress shortly following the devastating attacks. Making sure that everyone boarding is as safe as possible. It came to a point where I had to give and discuss current political happenings to the TSA officers for a good 20 minutes for everyones safety on the airplane. Personal experiences aside, a post 9/11 world, is no doubt much stronger, smarter and a lot more aware.

  16. Even though 9/11 was a terrible event, it has changed America for, in most ways, the better. We have, for example, increased security and surveillance both on airplanes and online, showing that we've become less reactive and more proactive. I also think it's important that our disaster has encouraged others in the world to stand up for their freedom, both by overthrowing leaders and giving themselves a voice through social media. 9/11 has also made us less dependent on other countries, and it has shown the world that, not only can we survive great tragedy, but we can emerge from it even stronger than before.

  17. 9/11 was such a shocking and devastating event in history for the US and there seemed to be no hope for good on that day. However, in years since, we as a nation have become much more advanced in many aspects. From safer air travel and airport security, to awareness of terrorism as a whole, the United States' tragic wake up call has made us stronger in the end.

  18. Although I don't remember what I was doing the day of 9-11, I will never forget the day or it's ramifications. I remember the feelings of disgust and surprise I felt once I actually learned what had occurred on that day. I then felt a feeling of pride upon learning how America had dealt with the situation and grown from it. Since the tragedy of 9-11, America has become more self-sufficient and safe, while also becoming a larger player as a police on the world stage and a larger advocate of freedom and democracy!

  19. 9/11 is the day the world changed forever. I am disgusted that someone was so evil to do what they did. My txt messages and phone calls could be being tracked by some higher official. Who knows, someone could be looking at this whole blog right now because we're discussing 9/11 and other provocative information. I don't like the feeling of possibly being watched all the time. Big Brother much? (referring to George Orwell's famous novel "1984") Events like these make me consider of possibly being a native american and living under a shell of peace and harmony, without a care in the world. 9/11 has changed my life forever.

  20. Although 9/11 is a day that will live in infamy, it brought Americans closer together and changed our every day lives. Even though our culture has become more diverse, Americans have a greater sense of nationalism and unity because of this event. We have gained confidence with the elimination of al-Qaeda's leader and the lesser dependence on foreign oil. Air travel has become safer as a result of new precautions being taken. 9/11 has completely changed America. This day is a symbol of how America can overcome tragedies and rebuild stronger than before.

  21. Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the United States of America entered a phase of darkness and fear. However, over time, the once-crippled, United States regained balance from this tragedy. Nowadays, military expansion in the middle-east, increased security measures, and the expansion of the intelligence agency have worked together to stop terror at its doorstep. These measures have prevented replication of the 9/11 attacks and have secured American sovereignty.

  22. Post 9/11 is not the great place that everyone makes it out to be. As a nation we can no longer communicate or commute without the government aka Big Brother watching and tracking our every move. They way that we have been conditioned to believe that the need for an outrageous standing army and that the mounting nation debt is nothing out of the normal should be alarming. In addition I do not believe that our intervention in the Middle East has led to the increase in overthrown regimes simply because people can only be oppressed so long before they snap. I just hope that everyone doesn't feel that because we are "safer" and all of our current threats have been disposed of that we can breathe easy and relax because before long the American people could become the target.

  23. 13 years after the tragedy that shaped our country for good, the U.S. has evolved into an even safer and more unified country. Post 9/11 has shown a huge increase in the amount of security measures taken. There has been a significant rise in air travel regulations and tapping of our phones and Internet by government personal. Although some may see these things as an invasion of privacy, it’s measures like these that our helping to hopefully keep our country free of any threats of terrorism. Due to this increase in security measures, the U.S. was finally able to track down and kill al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden 9 years after September 11th. Despite the tragedy that 9-11 was and is still remembered as today, the U.S. has grown to become an even stronger and more united nation.

  24. There's no question that our government's response to the terrorist attacks on 9/11 has massively strengthened our ability to defend the country from rising threats. But our "War on Terror" has in some ways adversely impacted our society. We have fallen prey to terror by allowing our anger to overtake rationality, by labeling our enemies and dehumanizing them in ways that only fuel both sides of the conflict. Many of us would proudly cheer the death of a person affiliated with a terrorist group, then condemn their communities when they do exactly the same to us. Without realizing it, we're stoking the anti-Americanism that is the root of all terrorist threats. I hope as much as anyone that we can one day eradicate terrorism and restore peace, but that day won't come if we continue our obsession with revenge.

  25. September 11, 2001, was a day that changed our nation drastically; a day we will always remember. Since the tragedy, Americans have shown more pride, made major advancements in safety and security, and increased military action against other countries. Other positive impacts include: less dependence on foreign fuel, a rise of multicultural Americans, and more communication via the web. However, our country’s strong military reaction towards Afghanistan and Iraq has caused a surge in anti-Americanism in the Muslim world. Although we wanted to believe the terrorism would end, it’s still become a threat today; luckily our nation takes great measures in the assurance that our nation is safe. Despite the tragedy that struck our nation that day, we’ve become stronger as a unit, more secure, and hopefully will continue to learn from our past.

  26. The steps our government has taken to help protect the security of our nation since 9/11 have been enormous, from internet surveillance to air travel. However, I feel that this tragic event has negatively impacted our country as a whole due to our plunging debt spent on war efforts, which result in dehumanizing events occurring overseas. Although we've improved communication and many people are able to voice their opinions, it's quite sad that it takes something so devastatingly tragic to get people to stay informed on what's going on in the world.

  28. While 9/11 was horrific to the entire American Community, it made us a lot stronger as a whole. 9/11 has brought our race groups together in a very ironic way almost. It has set a goal in our defense system to stop the war on terror, keeping people from dying in the process. Technologically, we've gotten farther through the internet focused on change, and our entire internet has gotten faster and better since the event. Security has improved in our country and our defense and intelligence has improved undeniably. While 9/11 was bad at first, it may have benefited us in the long run.

  29. Although the events that occurred on September 11th, 2001 were devastating, they quickly created a sense of nationalism in our country that Americans, nor the world, had ever seen before. Not only did the traumatizing and horrific events of that day unify the country as a whole, but it also produced an immense amount of pride. As we mourned those whose lives were tragically taken from us, anger stirred within the country as a whole to then lead to a monumental event on May 2nd, 2011. The US successfully assassinated the leader of Al-Queda and the director, for lack of a better word, of the events of 9/11. Thirteen years later, the US continues to shape and change, as well as mourn and remember those scarring events of that fateful day. Due to the events that took place post 9/11 life has been created to ensure that another event as this one can be prevented as well as to keep the safety of americans ensured. We have been blessed with safer air travel and airport security, as well as awareness and knowledge to learn and thrive from. As tragic as 9/11 was, it has, in the long run, ensured americans more safety and security than before. We remember, we rebuild, we come back stronger.

  30. To me, a post 9/11 world means the same as a pre 9/11 world or a world with no 9/11 attack, something we all rightfully wished happen. Meaning, the world is a cold, cruel place. That's what it means to me. There was terrorism before the 9/11 attacks and there is terrorism after, just as there were other problems/ threats before and there continues to be other problems. Of course safety improved and technology advanced, I am not arguing against that. But aren't we always looking to improve safety? To make things more safe? And technology always is advancing, after all, that's what technology is. We always want the new, better things: the Iphone 5 compared to Iphone 4. However, I am no way implying that 9/11 is not an important, monumental day. We should always remember the innocent lives lost and the many brave men and women, most of whom, volunteer responders that risked their lives and made huge sacrifices for our country. Never Forget, as the saying is. But we should never forget all the other terror attacks occurring all around the world, such as the London Bombings. Terrorist threats still are a main concern and should be eradicated, justice and peace should be spread! And that is what a post 9/11 world means to me

    ReplyDelete
  31. When I saw the World Trade Center burning on television at four years old, I could not comprehend the weight of what had happened. The attacks on September 11, 2001 impacted our country in one of the worst ways; war. The War on Terror has almost been a constant in the lives of my generation, and many of us aren't old enough to remember a pre-9/11 world. We have heard about being able to walk right up to a family member's gate at the airport from our parents or other adults, and have even seen it on movies, but have not, or cannot recall experiencing it for ourselves. Since then, measures have been taken to prevent a reoccurrence. America will not have another terrorist attack on our own soil, and the paranoia that there could be has caused many changes, like those in airports. Overall 9/11 made the American public nervous, hateful, and scared toward the topic of terrorism, and to me, having the country on the edge and ready to jump could cause oversights and a lack of focus on major things that could prevent more suffering and loss.

    ReplyDelete
  32. A post 9/11 world means that the United States is no longer in its own bubble, untouchable by "Old World" issues. With the improvements in technology, it was only a matter of time until people would realize that the world was getting smaller and would start to think more on a more global level. The the United States being attacked galvanized us into action and we lashed out at everything that seemed a threat both in America and abroad. The world is more aware now then it ever has been and most people aren't used to that.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It's no secret, the devastation 9/11 caused. "The day the Earth stopped turning" as Alan Jackson once sang. On that somber Tuesday, the world as we once knew it, ceased to exist. But, rather than crumble under all our grief, America rose from the ashes, and in traditional American fashion, proved the strength of our country. Not very many countries would be able to turn around and react the way we did. Yes, we mourned for those we lost on that horrid day, and we continue to mourn for them, along with people who have lost their lives in "the war on terror." But they didn't die in vain. We've since killed Osama Bin Laden, the Al-Qaeda leader, yet again proving America's resiliency. As heinous of an act 9/11 was, America's proven that we'llcontinue to be the "Home of the Brave."

    ReplyDelete
  34. Although 9/11 was a terrible day for our country, the event pulled our nation together to create a stronger, safer, and prouder America. Whenever there is a natural disaster, like Hurricane Katrina, or a humanitarian tragedy, such as the shootings at Virginia Tech or Sandy Hook Elementary School, prayers and support flows into the affected area from around the nation in what seems to be the blink of an eye. As many people have mentioned, we have increased our air travel security, as well as the restrictions we have when individuals leave or enter our international borders. Finally, we celebrate Memorial Day, Labor Day, Patriots Day, and Independence Day much more than we ever have before. Typically, people either smile or say “thank you” to men and women in uniform (and if you’re not doing this, please reevaluate), and on nearly every street in the United States on almost any given day of the year, you will pass an American flag while driving down the road. Even though 9/11 was an absolutely horrendous day for our nation, the event made our country stronger, more powerful, and more closely-knit than ever before.

    ReplyDelete
  35. A post 9/11 world, although on the outside seems to be safer, in fact is not. 9/11, a tragedy that brought many Americans together, brought forth new security measures and safer international affairs, but also heightened the idea of terrorism and fear. For example, although many additional security measures were added, many of times, workers in airports cheat the system to speed up the lines of security check points. One time, when going through security, a knife was not confiscated and passed through security at the airport. Also, many people fear anyone of Islamic faith, even though a high percentage of the people are not part of the terrorist groups, creating tension and violence in the states. After terrorism, people turn to violence more so than turning to peaceful resolutions. Also, during WWII, many men and women volunteered to protect their country. Post 9/11, the volunteer rates/enlisting for the military were extremely low, proving: although men and women all over the country came together to create a stronger country, the military did not become stronger. Therefore, although many positive effects came out of 9/11, like security, and technology, the world has not become a safer place.

    ReplyDelete
  36. A post 9/11 world is a world of unprecedented government involvement in our lives, in the foreign affairs of countries that, by all rights, America has no claim to, and a crushing debt that continues to rise. To be fair, 9/11 DID bring America together, but it brought America together in a way that only caused more strife throughout the world. It drew the US into two costly wars, that much is certain and well-recognized, but what most people don't think about is the fact that these wars destabilized the Middle East to such a degree that we are still dealing with the aftershocks today. It was the US's decision to maintain a presence in the Middle East that has "allowed" the region to fall even further into chaos. Don't get me wrong, there are certain things that should never go unpunished, like the use of chemical weapons on one's own people, but it is not America's job to act as the global police force. It is a role that the US has taken on by itself. Other countries are happy to let us because it means that they are not spending their taxpayer's money on other countries' issues and they are not in danger of becoming the next target for the terrorists that feel wronged by America's meddling in the Middle East. If 9/11 had never occurred, our world would be a much safer place, and that is for sure. One single event was the catalyst for events that have claimed the lives of thousands of people, a large percentage of them innocent bystanders to a war on terror that can never be won. The sad fact is that 9/11 occurred and that has backed the US into a corner. America has to continue it's involvement in the world's affairs simply to protect itself. A post 9/11 world is a world where the borders on a map don't matter as much, far more important are the borders drawn by the conflicting ideals of the world. The world is rapidly becoming groups of like-minded countries fighting to perpetuate their own idea of how the world should be run.

  37. Following 9/11, the United States changed drastically. The government began to take preventive measures to ensure that a tragedy such as the World Trade Center would never occur again. These methods included surveillance of communications, wars in foreign nations (War against Terror), and a plan to stop an attack in place. Despite criticism of how widespread the surveillance of civilian communications is, it has effectively monitoring data to ensure that nothing is being planned thru email and such. The wars in the middle east have been targeting terrorist and radical groups in areas such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan. Although it has effectively crippled terrorist groups, it has also destabilized the region. It has also brought along a fear and ignorance of muslims in the United States. Although 9/11 wasn't the first terrorist attack, it was the first attack of this scale here on United States territory. Before 9/11, it seemed hard to imagine something occurring on US soil, but it brought a harsh reality that anything can occur. Since then, the US has been much more cautious, however it has still not developed a foolproof plan to prevent terrorism, as recent events such as the Boston bombing has shown us.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The tragic events of 9/11 caused many changes throughout the United States and even the rest of the world. Obviously, security is now much more of a point of focus all across the country, from airports to sporting events. While this can involve invasive procedures that many people do not like, if it stops another attack it is worth it. A 10+ year war was started, and despite giving severe blows to terrorist operations, the US has found terrorism much more difficult to defeat than expected. Even today, the war in Iraq can be traced back to the events of 9/11.

    ReplyDelete
  39. While 9/11 did cause a sense of panic in this country, not only negatives came out of it. After this terrorist attack, the U.S. almost gained a sense of "independence" from the aid of other countries. We became much les reliant on energy sources of the Middle East. Also it is mostly beneficial that security has become more advanced. While it does cause aggregation, our live are now much more protected. A post 9/11 world does not have to just focus on what happened that fateful day, it can focus on what the U.S. can do to prevent it again

    ReplyDelete
  40. A post 9/11 world to me means that the world is not always a safe place. Although in our imagination the world seems like a field of freshly grown flowers just begging to be picked, there is always danger around the corner. Although just like many things in life there are always positive aspects to negative things. For an example, after 9/11 one of the major key concept that i have seen through images online is that on that tragic day, all Americans have come together in all races and just where shocked together but peacefully with each other. Like the person beside you was not considered a complete stranger, but as a brother or sister that was put on this crazy world in order to help one another out, instead of fighting with each other. Lastly airport security have completely stepped their game up since this incident and have prevented many dangerous altercation from happening.

  41. Post 9/11, the world has become more cautious and knowledgeable to these types of situations. The citizens of America joined together to mourn, and the world showed its love and support. We have bonded over this tragic event and there are some security measurements that have changed. Some of them being, airport security, tapping of cell phones, and monitoring any activity. People might argue that it is an 'invasion of privacy' but its for our own safety, and citizens fail to realize that. 9/11 has made America more driven to prevent any more terrorist attacks.

  42. 9/11 is arguably one of the worst tragedies the U.S. has seen. Many people panicked and more were paranoid for the future. Immediately, President Bush made it clear that no one can commit such a crime and get away with it. Following up with his words, the U.S. makes tremendous gains in technology and rely less on Middle Eastern countries for gas. Instead, we start producing more natural gas for a more efficient fuel. Following 9/11, other acts of terror have left our people with the thought that their safety is never guaranteed. In Response, U.S. security was a top priority. whether it's more airport regulations, CIA investigations, or even more cops in public areas. With all the changes made in response to 9/11, one thing that will never change is the devastation in our hearts from any of the acts of terror.

  43. Generally speaking, the US grew stronger after 9/11. Even though we lost so many beloved Americans, it taught the country to be safer and stronger. It brought us awareness to our future enemy and we've begun to take better precaution and buckle down terrorism little by little over the years. Having this happened, America is now more secure and stronger than ever. We remember 9/11 as one of the turning points in US history.

  44. Although it has been seen in a post nine eleven era, the United States grew as a nation in several ways. The nation's national security and overall strength had a massive increase, but however the nation's economy also suffered severely. Through time, the United States has battles terrorism through the war in Iraq starting during the Bush administration and ending during The Obama administration. Although this is a never ending battle, the United States continues to battle its foes with help of its allies through all parts of the world. This era may be remembered as a tragic one, but nevertheless, it still an era of great unity and strength for such a prosperous nation such as the United States of America.

  45. I think that although people were initially bound together by the tragedy, the amount of bias and hate has overshadowed any good that may have come after the attacks. While the security systems in America may have improved, socially things are much worse due to racial profiling and discrimination, along with the actual war that ensued following the attacks. They created a biased, paranoid, and self-victimizing America.

  46. Our world post 9/11 is definitely different than the life that people had before this tragedy; I do not find this incident good but it did make people rely on each other more which brought about a unity and patriotism that I feel that nation lacked in. I do feel that people did become more skeptical, cautious, and self-aware then they were before which I find that this incident taught them that is important to be aware of their surroundings and be aware of what is happening in the nation and what is happening outside of our little so called "safe" bubble.

  47. While everybody looks back on 9/11 as a tragic and horrible day(which it was), it was in many ways a day that began strengthening the United States as a whole. Without question, it was a turning point. I can remember going to watch the taking off and landing of commercial jetliners before 9/11. Federal marshals would let my family in through security checkpoints with backpacks and bags without a search. Since then regulations have been put in place, but it is for the security of the nation and it's people. I think 9/11 sparked something along the lines of Pearl Harbor in that al-Qaeda underestimated America's will to fight back. It was a change for the better.

  48. I don't really remember much about 9/11 at all. My parents didn't talk about it either. After the discussion in class, I asked my father about what has changed after 9/11. He said that there was a lot more security everywhere. He didn't mind much because they had a reason.

  49. 9/11 was the biggest reality check the U.S. has ever received. Pearl Harbor was the last time we were attacked on our soil and it seemed impossible for it to happen again (because America is a world power and seems invincible), up until then. Since the attack on the World Trade Center, America has become humble and has relentlessly been building up its defense and intelligence surveillance of her own people. These precautions have been taken in order to keep Americans safe with absolutely no excuses. To me, a post 9/11 world is one where everything I do is most likely recorded. Although I may not like it, there is nothing I can do about it right now.
