Olivia Muly: although terrorism obviously existed before 9/11, now it has become more common; seemingly as a way for groups of people isolated from the global economy/culture to project power internationally; more than they actually possess.

Elizabeth Wiersma: There is heightened security, especially at airports, and increased government surveillance of personal information.
ReplyDeleteThe degree of airport security has evolved massively since 9/11. For example, passengers are required to go through more intense screening concerning their luggage, liquids, and are required to remove their shoes in many airports. Furthermore, discrimination and the stereotyping of muslims as "terrorists" has increased immensely. Americans are also now more aware of terrorist groups than they were before.
ReplyDeleteSofia Ackerman: Since the attacks that occurred on 9/11, many things in our country have changed. The Department of Homeland security was created to better protect our country from all kinds of danger. Obviously airport security changed drastically to have more secure air travel. There was also an increase in prejudice towards the middle eastern community which was lead on by the media surrounding the attacks of 9/11 and has continued in our society, even now in 2015 it is present.
ReplyDeleteJessica Ellison: Since 9/11 The Department of Homeland Security was created in hopes to better protect the United States from terror attacks. There has also been an increase in airport security to ensure safer travel.
ReplyDeleteThe most obvious changes that Americans think about every day is the creation of Homeland Security and tightened airport security procedures. However, there was a big effect on the intelligence community, as the 9/11 commission suggested that the government agencies, such as the CIA and the FBI, and the military work more closely together. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence was created to collectively oversee the FBI and CIA. Both of my parents worked in the CIA before and after 9/11, and have experienced the changes firsthand.

DeleteCorrection: The DNI was created to oversee the entire intelligence community, a total of 16 agencies, including the FBI and CIA.
DeleteOver the past 14 years, the U.S. and other countries have done much work to make sure a tragedy like 9/11 never occurs again. 9/11 also had a profound effect on racial tensions between Muslims and Americans. It will take many years to undo the damage done by 9/11 to racial tensions in America.
ReplyDeleteThe 9/11 attacks have had many lasting social and political impacts. Socially, the attacks caused the public's idea of an "American" to change, resulting in an increase in the number of deportations and the level of racial tensions. They also caused the US to refocus resources on internal surveillance which redefined the balance between personal privacy and public security.
ReplyDeleteThe attacks of 9/11 were what brought the US into the wars in the Middle East, which have had a profound effect on the stabilization of the region, the effects of of which are being felt strongly around the world today. Of course, the attacks also led to strong airport security not only in the U.S, but around the world. Racial tensions against Muslims has also greatly increased due to 9/11.
ReplyDelete9/11 propagated the expansion of the federal government, creating wasteful, inefficient, "new" agencies (ex: DHS, TSA) and unconstitutional programs (NSA's Prism, TSA's We Must Taze You Now.) Because of weak leadership by Republicans and Democrats, we entered a number of wars against stable authoritarian regimes that hindered American interests in the Middle Easts (ex: Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan) and allied with other stable authoritarian regimes that advanced our interests (ex: Saudi Arabia, UAE.) 9/11 has deepened political polarization within the United States, especially in regards to treatment of Muslim-Americans with liberals painting Islam as a religion of peace and conservatives slandering Islam with charges of misogyny, violence, and violent misogyny.

Seeing as I did had never been on a plane before 9/11 I can only read that airport security has increased. In addition, there seems to be a heightened "war on terrorism" that seems to have negative effects on the Muslim community, painting them all as radical or terrorists, even though this could not be farther from the truth.

After the events of 9/11, Congress passed many new acts such as the TSA, to increase airport security. TSA has much stricter rules and regulations than previous airport protocols. New government agencies were also created to keep an eye out for terrorist activity such as the Department of Homeland Security.

Laura Johnson: Besides federal laws that have been added or amended, the country's viewpoint on foreigners has changed. Within my own family, there are members who question the innocence of the majority based off of a few. In addition, foreign relations becomes a hot topic during holidays.
ReplyDeleteA lot has changed since 9/11. An example would be airport security. Airport security was more calm before 9/11 happened. There was a metal detector and brief luggage checks before entering the plane. Post 9/11, you would see more advanced technology when trying to board a plane. A scanner and even surprise inspection on certain people or person boarding. Most of the time you cannot even bring simple things onto a plane like a shampoo bottle or shavers.

Many things have changed since September 11th. For example airport security has increased dramatically along with prejudice against many Muslims. Many safety precautions have been added as well to our laws.
ReplyDeleteThough 9/11 did not affect me personally many things around me have changed. The main things that changed were the establishment of the department of homeland security and the Patriot Act. These regulations allowed for the government to further prevent terrorism. Though acts of terrorism continue such as the Wisconsin Sikh Temple and the Boston Marathon bombing, I feel as if the country would have been more prone to destruction and terrorism if the Department of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act did not exist. Another way our country has changed since 9/11 is security. It is not only airports, but hospitals and museums and many other places. 9/11 has taught this country to take every single precaution needed to maintain the safety of its citizens.
ReplyDelete9/11 led to many changes in the American society and the Federal Government. Less than efficient programs such the DHS and TSA where created, and acts against the freedoms of the American people such as NSA Prism where also enacted. The Bush administration used this event to further our interests in the Middle East, using this event for reason to side with UAE and Saudia Arabia, thus leading to mass destabilization of the region, and leaving room for groups such as ISIS to spark up and take control. 9/11 also led to a polarization of the liberals and conservatives. Liberals claimed that Islam was a religion of peace while Conservatives labeled Islam as a religion of violence, and misgoyny.

The attacks of September 11th brought upon drastic changes to America. First and foremost, security was enhanced and was enforced much more strictly. Second, discrimination against Muslims rose to an all-time high. Lastly, other campaigns were launched, such as the NSA, to keep attacks such as 9/11 far from possible. The American people learned the hard way that our country was not 100% safe 100% of the time
ReplyDeleteSidney Williams: In the past 14 years since September 11, there has been more high level security keeping a watchful eye out on anything even slightly suspicious. An unfair discrimination against Muslims that may or may not last forever, and the government intruding and evading on our privacy.

Since 9/11/01, we cannot get to the gates of the airport without passing through security, which changes and becomes more efficient every day. We have increased our web and border security and we live our lives with a different view towards the kinds of people who might terrorize our country.
ReplyDelete-Madison Johnston
The airport security was increased along whit a lot more regulation when traveling anywhere due to the bombings. Along with the more funding going into the defense of the US against terrorist attacks.
ReplyDeleteSince the 9/11 attacks airport security has increased. Homeland Security was created as result of 9/11 as well. There has also been an increase in the discrimination of muslims. The government also has been more watchful in web activities .
ReplyDeleteThe most immediate changes in government policy prompted by the 9/11 attack were the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act. On the public level, there was a massive increase of travel security, particularly in the air transit system. Much of the Islamic faith has also been misrepresented in popular culture since the attack, often as a radical and violent movement against western culture, when the truth couldn't be farther from the perception. The world has also developed more updated forms of terrorism, both in recruitment as seen with ISIL and in means itself, as seen with cybersecurity attacks.

Emily Roché: Since the attacks on 9/11, I think the U.S. has become more conscious of its surroundings, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. Airport scanners can be seen as an invasion or privacy but they are also the reason flying is for the most part safe. I also feel that after 9/11 terrorism has become a broader term used in our nation. Due to the race of the attackers stereotypes have become more apparent and, to be honest, walking alone at night with certain people could make me uncomfortable. But that doesn't mean all those from the Middle East are looking to harm our nation, because for all we know it could be China attacking us next. I definitely think the way the U.S. views races and people's intentions has tightened up since 9/11.
ReplyDeleteIt's a pain in the butt to get in and out of the country now. My dad has been strip searched 3 times.
ReplyDeleteSince 9/11, I believe there has been a huge spike in homeland security, especially in airports. There is also a mass breaching of cell phones, which has been debunked by Edward Snowden. But most of all, there has been a reoccurring issue of restlessness in the middle east, and a policy of intervening on their affairs to make those countries more developed and educated.

DeleteSince 9/11, not only has airport security gotten tighter and discrimination against Muslims (or people who remotely look Muslim), it has brought out one of the most dangerous human emotion, hate. America's first thought after the catastrophe occurred was, "invade the Iranians" and till this day, although the numbers have decreased, whenever 9/11 comes by and people are once again reminded of the horrors of that day, the discrimination, the hate, and the tears are once again reignited in America.
ReplyDeleteGerald Bonsu
Airport security has not only severely tightened as a consequence of 9/11, but we have also adopted this anti-Muslim racism that is essentially country wide. We, as a nation, started to view Muslims, Sikhs, or essentially anyone of middle eastern descent with disdain, as if every middle easterner was an Islamic extremist, when this simply isn't true. In fact, only a fraction of a percent of Muslims are extremist, in fact, Islam is a religion of peace. This bigotry in our world is unnecessary, and frankly, unwarranted.
ReplyDeleteObviously we have had an increase in airport security but as a nation we changed from being a relatively accepted society of people to being scared of every Muslim person. Another major impact is the war on terror that we entered in Afghanistan and other Middle Eastern Countries.
ReplyDelete-Jake Haines
Since security has tightened recently, people are much more afraid of Muslims and really any person of that persuasion. The shame of the matter is that most people like that are the kindest and most generous people you've ever met. It's a shame that the ideals of a tiny percentage of the population has created this huge rift among Mankind.

DeleteDaisy Garner- Since 9/11 the world had changed drastically. The War on Terror was a direct result of 9/11 which caused the death of hundreds of thousands of United States Soldiers and Afghans. Not to mention, billions of dollars. To many, the war is actually very controversial; some call it a way for America to go to the Middle East for oil. Even though Osama was taken down, Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups like Isis still exist, and civilians are still being killed. Unfortunately, many Middle Eastern countries actually hate the United States.
ReplyDeleteAnother direct result of the war was an increase of Islamophobia in the United States. Many started to fear Muslims because they assumed they were hiding something or involved. I did not experience this ignorance of course, however, one of my Muslim best friends did. He said ever since 9/11, going through security at the airport became a hassle for his family and they were always singled out.
*Not just Afghans, but Middle Eastern civilians.
DeleteThe world is a much more secure place, not just in airports. 9/11 also sparked the terror scare around the world.
ReplyDeleteThe country is more alert and watchful. Although a tragedy, it has taught us a lot and now we are a safer place to be in. We now have a bad view towards muslims and though stereotypes are bad, it is important we do not take any chances. It has led to an anti muslim agenda in the U.S.
